My homiletic preparation has been influenced by Pope Francis. I prayerfully prepare the homily under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Who is the Doer and I am the instrument. In so doing, I focus on one major theme, which guards against wandering and freely associating. The spotlight is on the Lord, not on me the homilist. In terms of length, the sweet spot seems to be 8 minutes, no more than ten. Preaching is a lot like drilling for oil: if you haven’t struck oil at 8 minutes, stop drilling! Finally, I try to address the “so what” factor: i.e., given what has been
preached regarding the Lectionary readings, especially the Gospel, now what? A good faith-filled homily must inspire the assembly to action; otherwise, it’s just a lecture.
